Getting off the Island: Palau Ubin

A few weeks ago we decided it was time to get off the island!  Only to head to another island!  After a short, 10 minute, not-so-fancy ferry ride we arrived on Palau Ubin.  Pulau Ubin is a small island situated in the north east of Singapore. Granite quarrying supported a few thousand settlers on Pulau Ubin in the 1960s, but only about a hundred villagers live there today. It is one of the last rural areas to be found in Singapore. (thank you wikipedia)

We had a great day riding the ferry and cruising around the island on rented bikes. We even saw a few wild animals!  Enjoy the photos of how we enjoyed a change of scenery!   Good-bye bustling city..hello quaint little island!
OUR FERRY RIDE AWAITS...

10 MINUTES LATER WE ARRIVED!

THEY SWAM WITH THEIR HEAD ABOVE WATER!
DAD AND LUKE HEADED UP TO THIS LOOKOUT
POINT WHILE THE GIRLS AND I STAYED DOWN

WE WON'T DISCUSS THAT SECONDS AFTER THIS WAS TAKEN
LILLY FELL OFF THE PIER..WHOOPS
WHILE WALKING BACK TO THE BIKES WE SAW A WILD BOAR!

AND THIS ROCK QUARRY
SOMEONE IS DONE WITH PALAU UBIN
THE TREE IS POINTING THE WAY HOME!
Was it the most exciting adventure we have ever been on? No..however it was a nice change of scenery and a great workout!  We were going to eat some local food on the island but pizza in the city sounded way better!  Time to head back to Singapore!  Hope this big tanker doesn't get in our way...it got a little close for comfort!

FLASHBACK: Favorite Day at The American School of Dubai

You might find this shocking but the move caused me to get behind on my blog posts.

I cannot though let International Day go unmentioned.  This was by far one of the top best days of my entire expat experience!  A day where over 60 different countries were represented in one place, The American School of Dubai.  A day where my children got to represent the USA in the flag parade.  A day where I heard my own children saying "Hurry!  We have to go visit Lebanon, Korea, Egypt, Pakistan..they have the best foods!"
Seriously?  AMAZING!
THE DAY STARTED WITH A FLAG PARADE.  DIFFERENT KIDS
WERE CHOSEN TO REPRESENT THEIR HOME COUNTRY.
SO EXCITED BLAKE AND OLIVIA GOT TO REPRESENT THE USA!
DRESS PURCHASED FROM THE JULY 4TH CLEARANCE SECTION
OF COSTUME EXPRESS!  IT WAS A HIT!
CAN YOU BELIEVE I BOUGHT THIS JACKET IN DUBAI!?
THREE OF MY FAVORITE FRIENDSWOOD GALS!
USA! USA!
WHAT AN EXPERIENCE TO SEE EVERYONE  IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY'S DRESS!
EACH COUNTRY GOT TO GO UP ON STAGE
AND TELL AN IMPORTANT FACT ABOUT THEIR HOMELAND.
THE CROWD ROARED FOR THE UAE AND THE USA!

FLAG PARADE!

After the parade the real fun began!  We headed to the field house where each country set up booths that represented their homeland.  The booths had food, music, entertainment, traditional dress, and much more!  The kids got to spend an entire day touring the booths, sampling the food and getting stamps in their "passports" along the way.  Words just can't express what an amazing day this was.
The ASD moms went all out to make sure their countries were represented.  They
went ABOVE AND BEYOND!  Here are some shots of just a handful
of the country booths....you can just see the pride they feel for their homelands!
CANADA!
MEXICO!  I FREQUENTED THIS BOOTH FOR SNACKS!
YUMMMMMM!
BRAZIL!
INDIA!
EGYPT...THIS BOOTH WAS AWESOME!
I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THIS WAS HE WAS SERVING
BUT IT WAS DELICIOUS!
JAPAN!
AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND!
AUSTRIA!
SOUTH AFRICA!
LEBANON!
FRANCE!
FINLAND
URUGUAY

PALESTINE

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST...USA!
WE SERVED HOT DOGS, BROWNIES AND ROOT BEER FLOATS
ARE YOU SURPRISED AT HOW LUKE CHOSE TO SHOW
HIS COUNTRY?  WHOOP!
THE ROOT BEER FLOATS WERE A HIT!  SO MANY KIDS
HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF ROOT BEER!

So what did I learn from International Day?

Growing up in America, it is ingrained in you that you live in the
BEST COUNTRY IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!!(TRUE! TRUE! TRUE!)...
What you don't realize is: Most people all over the rest of the
world feel exactly the same way about their countries!
Pride and Love for where we come from is something most of us all share.

Thank you American School of Dubai for all the amazing things you taught us.
Bryants miss you dearly!

Cheers from Singapore!
